You are not the only one if you ever stand in the kitchen with a coconut and wonder how on the earth you're supposed to crack this tropical fruit. I've been there-braced with various kitchen tools, determination to open the coconut, and absolutely no clue where to start.
After countless attempts (and yes, a few memorable misfortune), I've learned the art of coconut opening, and I'm here to share everything I know about getting into these tough nuts. Let's have a look.
Understanding Your Coconut
Well, now that you look forward to knowing the process of how to open a coconut, there are a few things that you need to look at in the grocery store. You'll typically find two different kinds of coconuts, which are:
Young Green Coconuts
These coconuts are the ones that are used in tropical drinks you run into. I am talking about green coconuts which have a white shell and are pointed at the top; they contain chilled coconut water. The surface of this coconut is tender and somewhat gelatinous, which is understandable when you see such meat inside. One of the advantages of these coconuts is they can normally be opened much easier than mature ones.
Brown Mature Coconuts
These are the classic, round, brown coconuts we are most familiar with. They have harder meat and less water, but they are packed with rich flavor and nutrients. They are tougher to crack.
Choosing the Right Coconut
For the tasteful coconut meat, you have to choose a fresh coconut. But how? Here's how to choose:
- Shake It: Hold the coconut to your ear and shake it. You should hear the sloshing sound of water inside.
- Weight: A good coconut feels heavy for its size, which indicates ample water content.
- Inspect the Eyes: Look for three "eyes" or indentations on one end. These spots are softer and easier to make a hole to drain water.
How To Open A Young Coconut?
If you've got yourself a young green coconut. Let me walk you through opening it safely.
What you'll need:
- A large and sharp knife
- A clean straw for drinking
- A spoon for scooping out the soft meat
- A steady cutting board or work surface
- A cup or bowl for the coconut water
Steps to Open a Young Coconut
After collecting all the necessary tools, let's begin to open it:
- First, place your coconut on its side on your cutting board. See how it has a pointy end and a broader end? We will work with the top pointy end first.
- Look for the softest "eye"- you'll notice three dark spots at the top. One of them is usually softer than the others. This is where you have to pierce through.
- Using your knife, carefully slice off the white outer husk at the top in a square or hexagon shape. Think of it like cutting the top off a pumpkin, but you're just removing the outer layer for now. Take your time with this part (no need to rush and be careful with your hands).
- Once you've cleared away the husk, you should see the actual coconut shell. It'll be pale and smooth.
- Now for the fun part, take your knife and firmly pierce that softest eye we found earlier. You might need to twist the knife a bit to make the hole bigger.
- Pop in your straw and enjoy that fresh, sweet, and refreshing coconut water, or drain it in the bowl.
- After you've drunk the water, use your knife to split the coconut in half, the young coconut shell is much softer than mature brown ones, so this shouldn't be too hard. Just tap firmly around the middle with the back of your knife until it cracks open.
- Inside, you'll find the soft, jelly-like coconut meat. Use your spoon to scoop it out and enjoy.
How To Open A Mature Coconut?
While some methods require specific tools, others can be accomplished with common kitchen items. Here's a list of useful tools:
- Screwdriver or Metal Skewer: For puncturing holes in the coconut.
- Hammer or Mallet: To crack open the shell.
- Bowl: To catch the coconut water.
- Vegetable Peeler: For removing the brown skin from the meat.
- Oven (optional): For oven method.
- Saw (optional): For precise cuts if you want to preserve or reuse the shell.
You can use several methods, to open a mature brown coconut. Here's a step-by-step guide for each method making it easy to understand and follow.
1. The Hammer Method
You may have heard about this method or already tried it. It is one of the most popular methods because the process is very easy to apply.
- Use a screwdriver or skewer to poke holes in three of the eyes.
- Hold the coconut over a bowl and let the water drain out.
- Place the drained coconut on a sturdy surface.
- Use a hammer to tap around the equator of the coconut, rotating it as you go until it cracks open (you can cover the coconut with a towel and start tapping it with a hammer, as it will stop some mess).
2. The Bang Method
This method is straightforward and you can open a coconut without any tool but requires some outdoor space.
- As with the hammer method, poke holes in two eyes and drain into a bowl.
- Place the drained coconut inside a bag to avoid mess.
- Bang it against a concrete surface or wall until it cracks.
3. The Oven Method
Using heat can make cracking open a coconut easier by expanding its shell.
- Set your oven to 400 Degrees F (200 degrees C)
- Puncture holes and drain as before
- Place the drained coconut on an oven-safe dish and bake for about 10-15 minutes until you see cracks
- Let it cool before handling
4. The Saw Method
For those who want precision, especially if you are planning to use the shell for crafts or bowls.
- Puncture holes as previously described.
- Use a small saw to carefully cut along the natural seams of the coconut until it splits open.
Safety Tips
Opening coconuts can be risky if done carefully. Here are some safety tips:

- Keep fingers away from sharp tools and edges.
- Wear protective eyewear if using power tools.

How To Store Coconut Meat and Water?
After all those discussions, you may wonder can we store coconut? If yes, then how? No worries. Follow these steps to store your coconut water or meat.
Storing Coconut Meat
1. Refrigeration
- Fresh Coconut Meat: If you have fresh coconut meat, place it in an airtight jar or container. This tropical fruit can be kept in the refrigerator for 5 to 7 days.
- Shredded Coconut: If you have shredded coconut, it should be tightly packed in a container or a zip-lock bag to prevent moisture from getting in.
2. Freezing
- If you want to store coconut meat for a longer period, freezing is a great option. Cut the coconut meat into small pieces or shred it, then place it in a freezer-safe bag or container.
- Remove as much air as possible before sealing. Frozen coconut meat can last up to 6 months.
3. Thawing
When you want to use frozen coconut meat for your recipe, just take it out and let it defrost in the refrigerator if you are using it for the next day. But, if you want it immediately use the defrost button of the microwave.
Storing Coconut Water
1. Refrigeration
- If you want the best taste with several nutritional values, try to consume coconut water shortly after opening. However, if you have leftover coconut water, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
- It will generally stay fresh for about 3 to 4 days after being opened.
2. Freezing
- For longer storage, pour coconut water into ice cube trays and freeze it. Once frozen, transfer the cubes to a zip-lock bag or airtight container.
- This method allows you to use small amounts of coconut water as needed, and it can last for several months in the freezer.
3. Commercial Coconut Water
- Since packaged coconut water is available in the markets, ensure you don't forget to check the expiration date. Such packages should remain unopened and kept in a cool dry place until the date.
- After opening, store it the same as fresh coconut water, or refrigerate it as we discussed above.
