New York Yankees offseason moves 2024 include the potential signing of Cody Bellinger. The Yankees are set to make several changes for the upcoming season.

The team from New York has had a disappointing season as they got eliminated from the MLB playoffs on September 24 after a 7-1 loss to the Diamondbacks. The Bronx had made it past the regular season for the last six consecutive years.

They started the season as the defending champions of the East Division in the American League. They had a lot of expectations as their star player, Aaron Judge, was coming off a record-breaking 62-home run season.

Further, Brian Saben, who helped the Giants to three World Series wins in the 2010s, also joined as the executive adviser to general manager Brian Cashman. However, the Bronx could not meet the expectations and bowed out of the regular season.

Yankees Offseason Moves

Yankees offseason targets for the 2024 season include Cody Bellinger and Matt Chapman. Bellinger has been linked with the Bronx since the trade deadline.

The New York team started the 2023 season on March 30 with a 5-0 win against the San Francisco Giants at Yankee Stadium. They had a strong start to the campaign with a 48-38 record but went through multiple losing streaks and went 32-39 the rest of the way.

Injuries to star players and veterans failing to produce have been the major reason behind the Bronx's downfall. The franchise needs to make some significant changes to compete for a playoff spot and ultimately win the World Series title in the 2024 season.

Here are some of the areas where the Yankees must focus while making offseason moves:

1. Add players who get on base rather than smash home runs

The main reason behind the downfall of the New York Yankees in 2023 was their inability to reach bases. They are ranked 10th in the AL and 24th in the league in runs scored.

However, there has not been a lack of dingers for the Bronx Bombers, as they are ranked sixth in AL and eighth in MLB in scoring home runs. The main reason behind their lack of runs is their failure to reach base.

Most of the time, when a Yankee player smashed the ball out of the stadium, no one was on the base. Their batting average of .226 is the second-worst in the entire league, only better than the Oakland Athletics.

The franchise must either find players who hit for average rather than home runs this offseason or develop their players in such a way that they reach bases more often. A player who can get on base regularly is among the most important additions required for the New York team to improve on their record from this season.

2. Add quality left-handed hitters

A quality left-handed batter has been lacking in the Yankees roster for a long time. For a team that plays their home games in a ballpark that has a 314-foot short porch in the right field, not having a quality left-handed player is surprising.

Anthony Rizzo was the only left-handed hitter in the Yankees 2023 starting lineup. He also played only 100 games in the campaign because of a concussion he suffered after getting hit in the head during a game.

Rizzo should be back next season fully fit, and adding another quality left-handed hitter to the squad must be one of the things on the top of the list for the Yankees.

Yankees offseason predictions have Cody Bellinger as the primary target. The left-handed batter is in supreme form and is heading towards free agency, making him the perfect target for the Bronx.

3. Add proven starting pitchers to the team

Another main reason behind the New York Yankees downfall is the failure of the starting pitchers to make an impact. Gerrit Cole was the only shining star in the pitching rotation for the Bronx.

They compiled a pitching staff with starters who are known for getting injured, and because of that, most of them were unavailable for a significant amount of time throughout the season. Luis Severino, Frankie Montas, and Carlos Rodon all missed a significant number of games.

When available, they could not produce goods as compared to Cole. Gerrit has the second-best ERA in the league, but outside of him, the Yankees rotation combines for an ERA of 5.15.

Yankees offseason rumors have it that the team is keeping a tab on the Japanese star pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Pursuing a starting pitcher who is reliable and durable should be one of the first things on the list for the 2024 offseason.

Yankees Free Agent Signings 2024

Yankees free agent signings for the 2024 season have targets like Cody Bellinger and Matt Chapman. Bellinger is among the main targets for the New York team.

Shohei Ohtani is the highlight among the players in free agency for the upcoming season. However, signing the two-way player will not come cheaply, and with his recent injury, the Yankees might be better off looking elsewhere.

Julio Urias, Blake Snell, Clayton Kershaw, and Adam Wainwright are among some other free agents available for the 2024 MLB campaign.

Here are some of the free-agent signings that the Yankees can make in 2024:

  1. Cody Bellinger
  2. Matt Chapman
  3. Julio Urias
  4. Blake Snell

1. Cody Bellinger

Bellinger's comeback season has been one of the best of his career. The outfielder is batting an impressive .309/.359/.533 with an OPS of .892.

Although he has a mutual club option with the Cubs for the 2024 season, given his form, he might test free agency rather than taking the option. His performance will surely arouse plenty of interest from MLB teams in free agency, including the Yankees.

The 29-year-old outfielder provides value on both offense and defense, making him the perfect addition to the New York team. Cody has scored 93 runs, 96 RBIs, and 26 home runs for the Cubs in 126 games this year.

2. Matt Chapman

Chapman is not talked about as an option for the Bronx Bombers quite as often as Bellinger. But signing the Blue Jays third baseman makes perfect sense for the team.

While playing 135 games, Matt has scored 64 runs, 52 RBIs, and 15 home runs at an average of .241 in 2023. Adding Chapman to the roster is a great move for the Yankees, as they recently released their third baseman, Josh Davidson.

However, the franchise has not been successful with signing veterans in the recent past, but the unrestricted free agent is fairly young compared to other veterans. He can provide help on both sides of the field and handle the hot corner for years to come for the Yankees.

3. Julio Urias

With the Yankees needing a durable and reliable starting pitcher, Urias can be a great addition to the roster. The Dodgers starting pitcher has been decent in the ongoing campaign.

Julio has pitched 117.1 innings in 21 games for Los Angeles, striking out 117 players and accumulating an 11-8 record. He is an unrestricted free agent for 2024, making him the perfect choice for the New York side.

Urias joining Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes, and a healthy Carlos Rodon can be a great pitching rotation for the Yankees, providing insurance in case of injuries.

4. Blake Snell

Another unrestricted free agent for 2024 that makes great sense for the Bronx Bombers is Blake Snell. The Padres starting pitcher has been on great form in the ongoing major league campaign.

Snell leads the major league with an ERA of 2.25 while pitching 180 innings in 32 games. He has a 14-9 record for the season, giving away only 47 runs and striking out 234 batters, the third most in the league.

He can be a great addition to the 2024 Yankees roster, as he provides much-needed help to the Yankees pitching staff.
