Mickey's card is also the first card to be sold at eight figures worth of money at a sports auction. The Heritage Auction organization was the seller, and the buyer was an anonymous person from Rye, New York.

Anthony Giordano, the previous owner of the card, had bought it for $50,000 in 1991 and then hid it for 30 years until bringing it to the Heritage Auction. 

Mantle, aka the Commerce Comet, is regarded as the greatest switch hitter in MLB's history and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974. He played for the New York Yankees and won seven World Series and a Triple Crown.
