Austin Barnes played for Mexico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Austin has Mexican roots from his mother Stephanie Barnes.

Austin Barnes Mexico representation talks had already begun in October, with many shocked fans taking to Twitter after finding out about his Mexican roots.

The Dodgers player will be competing for the starting position with the Toronto Blue Jays, Alejandro Kirk who comes from the back of a solid 2022 season. With Will Smith, Austin has formed a solid partnership at Dodgers one he will be hoping to replicate with Kirk on the international platform.

Many Dodgers fans singled out Barnes for praise during the postseason. They called him the only player who showed up as he repaid the faith the organization had put in him when he signed the two-year contract in July.

In 2020, the catcher won the World Series title along with his current teammates, Gavin Lux, Tony Gonsolin, Chris Taylor, and as well as with his former teammate, Justin Turner.

Is Austin Barnes Mexican?

Barnes has Mexican roots from his mom Stephanie's side. She is the sister of the former MLB player Mike Gallego.

Gallego made his debut for the Oakland Athletics in 1985 and went on to play for two other franchises, including New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals.

One Dodgers fan even started a Reddit discussion surrounding Austin's Mexican roots. Though the original poster might have found out about the catcher's connection to Mexico after hearing the news, many Dodgers fans actually happen to know about it.

With the poll currently favorably at Yes, few of the fans even talked about from which side of the family he gets his Latino roots, and some also discussed his famous uncle, who previously played in the MLB.

In an interview with NBC in 2017, the catcher talked a bit about his famous uncle and how his presence in MLB helped shape his childhood. Barnes even recalled a moment of him attending the Cardinals games during his uncle's last few years in the MLB in the short one-minute video.

The discussion of Barnes representing Mexico in WBC began in October 2022 as Team Mexico announced the players committed to representing the green jacket.

In the 2023 Dodger Fan Fest held on February 4, the catcher confirmed that he was playing for Team Mexico and explained his legion to the country.

On her Facebook handle, Stephanie has shared several photos of her attending her sons' games and rooting for their success in the diamond.

Coming from a family that treasured the bat and ball game, going to baseball stadiums wasn't a new thing for Stephanie, who was a regular at her brother's matches.

During the 1980s, Stephanie might have been an Athletics fan as she saw her brother play for the MLB team. Though she might have seen her son lift the World Series Title in 2020, in 1988, her heart might have ached to see her brother's team being outdone by the Dodgers.

Stephanie has been a resident of Riverside, California, for the longest time and continues to live there with her husband, Dennis. So, when the time came for her to see off Austin to Arizona State, it was hard for the mom.

In 2017, as the Dodgers reached the World Series Finals, Stephanie was interviewed by The Orange County Register along with other members of the family.

But Stephanie said in her interview she was proud of her son's achievements and that he has always been proud of his roots. Stephanie is also available on Instagram with the username @mamabarnes but has decided to keep her handle private.

Austin Barnes parents Dennis Barnes and Stephanie Barnes come from a mixed family background. Dennis works at the Provident Bank as the Senior Loan Officer.

Dennis and Stephanie had always been huge baseball fans and would attend Mike's games together. The couple raised three sons who all went on to play baseball, and of them was even crowned the World Series Champion.

In 2018, the couple sat alongside for an interview as they talked about raising Austin. In the interview, Dennis talked about his son's partnership with the Dodgers pitcher, Clayton Kershaw, and how proud he was of his son playing alongside one of the modern greats.

Dennis showed the interviewer some of Austin's achievements and the 2017 National League Ring. When asked if he could detect what goes on in Austin's head during the game, Dennis said he had a tough time reading his son.

The answer contradicted what Mama Barnes said as Stephanie exclaimed she could see everything through the TV set, and seeing her son calm made her feel confident.

In September 2022, Dennis was present at the Dodgers Stadium as they revealed Austin's Bobblehead to the crowd. Dennis was seen carrying his grandson, Royce, and clicked a photo with his son on the special occasion.
