The 2023-24 MLB free agency will be a star studded affair with names such as Ohtani, Machado, and Kershaw set to test the market
Source : instagram

Possible 2023-2024 MLB free agents are Corey Kluber and Aaron Nola. The names will be known in November after World Series.

Stars such as Shohei Ohtani, JD Martinez, Clayton Kershaw, and Harrison Bader are some prominent names who are set to become free agents for next season.

Free agency is a duration which provides players with an opportunity to test their value in the open market. A player enters free agency when their initial six years contract ends with their team. Also, if the player is released or waivered by the team that owns them, they hit the market abruptly.

A free agent can sign with any team of their choice, given the mutual agreement between the team and the player.

This season's free agency, the 2022/23 free agency, just ended in mid-January last month, and we saw a lot of movements by the players among teams. Some retired, whereas others re-signed with their current team.

Around $4 billion were committed by teams to the available free agents, making it the most expensive free agency in the league's history, which is 147 years old.

The free agency frenzy will return in full swing when the upcoming World Series concludes in November 2023. Just like every other year, the following free agency will have many players all across the league eligible to test themselves in the market.

Some teams will be in need of a star man or a side piece in the roster, and the free agency will provide them the chance to sign them with the right amount of money and compensation.

Players from every position in the field will be in the market. There are many players who will be eligible and we definitely cannot cover all of them. Hence, here is a look into some of the most exciting players from every position that will potentially hit free agency in nine months' time later this year.

Catcher

Possible mlb free agents in 2023-2024 season in the catcher position are Yan Gomes, Yasmani Grandal and Mike Zunino.

Catcher is one of the most significant positions in all of baseball. It is also considered a leader of the team and the general on the field.

A catcher is the only player on the field with a full view of the pitch. Since they are placed behind the hitter on the home plate, thye can feel the game more intensely. The connection between the catcher and the pitcher is a crucial one for the defending team to come up with a win in any given match.

Many teams will be eyeing a good catcher in free agency for their roster and here are some interesting ones that will be potentially available come November:

Travis d'Arnaud

The first player we're looking at is the Atlanta Braves catcher, Travis Emmanuel d'Arnaud. The 34-year-old California native is one of the best hitters in the league among the catchers.

With a batting average of .252, he has 97 home runs in his career. The 2022 All-Star and the 2020 Silver Slugger Award winner also has championship experience, as he won one with the Braves in 2021.

Travis could potentially hit free agency but has a club option on his contract. If the Braves do not choose to pick up their option, he will hit the free agency market, and teams could have one amazing catcher to look at when November comes around. His salary for this coming season is $8 million.

Yan Gomes

Yan Gomes is another excellent catcher that can potentially be available in November.

The 35-year-old is currently with the Chicago Cubs and they have a club option on his contract. Yan is playing for $6 million for the upcoming season.

If the Cubs do not pick up the option, Gomes will hit the next free-agency market. Yan is a World Series champion and has won a Silver Slugger Award. The 2018 All-Star, who has a career 125 home runs to his name, will be a quality addition to any squad if he were to be available.

Yasmani Grandal

Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal is on an $18.25 million contract for the upcoming season.

The 34-year-old will most definitely hit the free agency come November as he has no options on his contract.

Yasmani Grandal has hit a total of 177 home runs in his career

Grandal has been to the All-Star game twice and was named to the 2019 All-MLB second team.  With 177 career home runs to his name, the 2010 ACC baseball player of the year will be a positive addition to any squad for a short-term duration, given his age.

Mike Zunino

Mike Zunino recently signed a one-year contract with the Cleveland Guardians on December 2022 for $6 million.

Youngest among the mentioned catchers at 31, the Florida native has been to one All-Star and has a Golden Spikes Award. If he were t be signed by any team or even if he ends up re-signing with the Guardians, they can rest easy knowing they have a capable catcher who is also good at his offensive play.

With 146 career home runs, Zunino is a mouth-watering free-agent prospect for next season.

First Baseman

Possible mlb free agents in the first baseman position in 2023-2024 season are Eric Hosmer, Max Muncy and Brandon Belt.

The first baseman is a fielding position in defense situated in front of the first base.

If a hitter hits the ball from the home plate towards the first base or along the lines of the first base, it is the job of the first baseman to make the play and potentially get the hitter out and avoid home from getting to the first base and progress the play.

The first baseman is a crucial position in a fielding lineup and no team can go sideways by having a good first baseman on their roster. Here are some interesting first basemen who can potentially be free agents for the next season.

Eric Hosmer

Eric Hosmer is one of the many significant first basemen available in the free agency for next season. Born on October 24, 1989, Hosmer is currently 33 years of age.

He just recently signed with the Chicago Cubs on a one-year deal worth just $720,000. This upcoming season is going to be huge for Hosmer as he has been provided with an opportunity to show what he's still capable of.

The 2016 All-Star and the 2015 World Series champion, he also has four Gold Glove Awards and a Silver Slugger Award to his name.

Max Muncy

Los Angeles Dodger Max Muncy has a club option in his contract at the end of the upcoming season.

The two times All-Star and the 2020 World Series champion, the 32-year-old has 144 total home runs in his career with a batting percentage of .231.

Either the Dodgers exercise his club option or if he ends up signing with someone else, the Texas native will be a great addition to the team.

Brandon Belt

Professional baseball First Baseman Brandon Belt recently signed with the Toronto Blue Jays on a one-year deal worth $9.3 million on January 10, 2023.

The 2016 All-Star and the two times World Series champion with the San Francisco Giants, he entered free agency for the first time this past year before signing with the Blue Jays.

Belt has a career .261 batting percentage and a total of 175 home runs to his name. After this season, any team that is successful in getting him on their squad will have won big in the off-season.

Josh Bell

The Cleveland Guardians first baseman Josh Bell is the 2019 All-Star and the 2022 Silver Slugger Award winner.

He signed with the Guardians on December 2022 for two years, $33 million contract. However, he has an opt-out clause, meaning he can opt out of his contract after the first year.

If he does so, Josh will be a free agent in November later this year, and teams will be happy to have him on their side. With a batting average of .262, the 30-year-old has 130 home run hits in his career.

Rhys Hoskins

Rhys Hoskins is the 29-year-old first baseman for the Phillies who completed six years at the club last season.

He has extended to stay for a year with a $12 million contract.

However, when the next free agency market opens, the 148 home run scorer California-born will be available for pickup in the open market.

Joey Votto

Cincinnati Reds Joey Votto is the 2010 NL Hank Aaron Award winner and the 2011 Gold Glove Award winner.

Our last first baseman is the most accomplished of all. However, at 39 years of age, he is also the oldest.

The six-time All-Star has been with the Cincinnati Reds all his career and the team even has a club option on his contract.

Considering his age, if the Reds do not exercise their option, Votto could hit the market, and the teams will have the opportunity to sign him, even if it could be for a short duration.

Second Baseman

Possible 2023-2024 mlb free agents in the second baseman position are Kolten Wong and Whit Merrifield.

Similar to the first baseman, the second baseman is positioned in front of the second base in the baseball field.

The primary task for a second baseman is to cover the field area between the first base and the second base. Whenever teams try to make a double play during the game, the second baseman is key to making it a success.

Since the second base is the most stolen base in baseball, the secondary baseman must also remain alert and quickly avoid a runner from the first base stealing the second base. Hence, it is one of the crucial positions for a team's defense.

Kolten Wong

Kolten Wong is the two-time Golden Glove Award winner. Having previously played for the Cardinals and the Brewers, he was traded to the Seattle Mariners on December 2, 2022.

After this upcoming season, Wong is slated to be an unrestricted free agent, meaning any team can have a go at him and try to lure him to their franchise.

With 82 career home runs, the three-time Fielding Bible Award winner will be a wanted target before the next season.

Whit Merrifield

Whit Merrifield has a mutual option on his contract with the Toronto Blue Jays.

If he were to continue beyond this upcoming season as a Blue Jay, both he and the team should mutually exercise the option.

In any situation that doesn't happen, the 34-year-old two-time All-Star will be a free agent. With 175 career stolen bases, he was the AL stolen base leader for three years.

Adam Frazier

The 31-year-old Adam Frazier signed with the Baltimore Orioles on a single-year deal worth $8 million on December 15, 2022, after becoming a free agent, meaning he will once again test the waters in the next free agency.

The 2021 All-Star has a career record of 43 home runs with a batting average of .273. Aside from being a second baseman, he can also play as an outfielder in the defensive proceedings, making him a somewhat attractive prospect for any team that can utilize his abilities.

Jonathan Schoop

Lastly, the final interesting and potential free-agent second baseman on our list is the Detroit Tiger, Jonathan Schoop.

The 31-year-old Curacaoan professional has 174 home runs in his career and was selected to the 2017 All-Star game.

This upcoming season can be his platform to show why he's worth a big-money contract and if he can perform to the best of his abilities, he will no doubt be a great free-agent prospect.

Third Baseman

Manny Machado and Matt Chapman are possible free agents in the third baseman position in 2024 season.

The third baseman as the name itself suggests is a fielding position in baseball situated in front of the third base.

Abbreviated as 3B, it is one of the toughest fielding positions when it comes to defending. A third baseman has to have a strong arm as more often than not, they have to throw the ball across the diamond to avoid the hitter getting to first base and with a quickness to the throw.

Likewise, apart from avoiding the base steal, it's the 3B's job to cover their side of the field when a ball is hit along the line, among other things.

Manny Machado

Manny Machado signed a 10-year contract with the Padres on February 2019 worth $300 million.

However, after completing five years at the organization past this upcoming season, he can opt out of his current contract and enter free agency.

The 30-year-old third baseman for the San Diego Padres is the most interesting potential free agent among players in his position. He is a six-time All-Star, two-time Golden Glove Award winner, 2020 Silver Slugger Award winner and two-time All-MLB first-team member.

Source : instagram

We don't know if he will, but if he does opt out, Machado will be a highly sought-after free agent for next season. He has 283 home runs to his name as of writing this article.

Matt Chapman

Another top-notch talent at third base is Matt Chapman. Unlike Machado, however, the Toronto Blue Jays star is sure to hit free agency before next season.

The 29-year-old California native has 138 home runs and was selected for the 2019 All-Star game. His accolades include winning the Golden Glove Award three times, the Platinium Glove twice, and the Fielding Bible Award twice.

This makes the 2018 Wilson Defensive Player of the Year one of the best defensive free agents prospects for next season.

Josh Donaldson

New York Yankee Josh Donaldson was traded to the team from the Big Apple last March to the Minnesota Twins. He has a mutual option on his contract.

Donaldson is already 37 years old, but his experience and acumen are the reason why teams would be willing to take him in.

The three-time All-Star and the 2015 AL MVP also has two Silver Slugger awards to his name along with the 2015 AL Hank Aaron Award. Getting Josh could be huge in terms of the intangibles he brings to the team along with his talents and abilities.

Shortstop

Possible 2023-2024 mlb free agents in the shortstop position are Javier Baez, Brandon Crawford and Tim Anderson.

shortstop is a baseball fielding position between the second base and the third base.

Shortstop is often regarded as the most important position among infielders. It is the task of the shortstop to stop the ball that is hot in the middle or to catch the ball in its vicinity if hit in the air.

Communication is key when it comes to defending in baseball, and the shortstop often is the one who dictates the communication and leads the infield. These are some of the interesting potential free agents for next season among Shortstop:

Javier Baez

Javier Baez recently signed a six-year contract with the Detroit Tigers in December 2021, worth $140 million.

Baez can opt out of it after the upcoming season, making him an attractive potential free agent. He is a two-time All-Star, the 2020 Gold Glove Award winner, 2018 Silver Slugger Award winner and NL RBI leader.

The 30-year-old Puerto Rican has 166 home runs with an average of .260 in his career. Also, Baez helped his team, Chicago Cubs win a world championship in 2016, earning the NLCS MVP in the process.

Javier would be a great free-agency target for teams if he were to opt out of his contract after the upcoming season.

Brandon Crawford

San Francisco Giants Shortstop Brandon Crawford is another player above the age of 35 we have on our list.

Crawford has been with the Giants since the start of his career, which has been immensely successful. During his time at the bay area, he has been to three All-Star games, helped his team win two World Series championships, and won four Gold Glove Awards.

The two-time Wilson Defensive Player of the Year and 2015 Silver Slugger Award winner will be one of the best shortstop options available in the market

Tim Anderson

The 29-year-old shortstop for the Chicago White Sox, Tim Anderson has a club option on his contract after the upcoming season.

If the White Sox fails to exercise the option, Anderson will go into free agency and there will definitely be suitors in the market for a player of his capabilities.

The two-time All-Star and the 2020 Silver Slugger Award winner has 97 home runs to his name with a batting percentage of .288. Tim was also named the AL batting champion in 2019.

Paul DeJong

The 29-year-old St. Louis Cardinals star Paul DeJong has a club option on his contract.

If the 2019 All-Star, who has 102 home runs to his name were to enter free agency come November, he would be one of the top shortstops available in the open market.

Outfielder

Possible outfielders who will be mlb free agents in the 2023-2024 season are Harrison Bader, Cody Bellinger and Joey Gallo.

Outfield is a defensive space in a baseball field situated the farthest from the hitter at the home plate.

Outfield is made up of three positions, which include the left fielder, the center fielder, and the right fielder. Outfielders are placed behind the infielders who are in closer proximity to the hitter and the base.

They are tasked with getting the ball back to the diamond to avoid any more runs when it's hit too far on the ground. Likewise, when the ball is shot in the air, most often than not, the outfielders are the ones who catch them and dismiss the hitter.

Harrison Bader

New York Yankees center fielder Harrison Bader is the 2021 Gold Glove Award winner.

Bader's contract expires after the upcoming season, and if he doesn't re-sign with the Yankees, he will be available as a free agent.

The 29-year-old New York native is a fan favorite now and hopes to remain where he is once his contract expires. However, if he were to enter the free agency market, Bader would be a worthy addition to any squad willing to pick him up with the right amount of money.

Cody Bellinger

Cody Bellinger recently signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Cubs worth $12 million.

Bellinger will enter free agency yet again in November, and he will be one of the prominent Center fielders to be available in the open market for teams looking for an outfielder. Not only an outfielder, but Cody can also play as a first baseman and has.

The two-time All-Star and 2019 NL MVP helped his team, Dodgers, win the World Series in 2020. If he were to change teams after the next free agency, they will have a bonafide star among their roster with Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Award to his name. Bellinger has had 152 home runs as of writing this article.

Charlie Blackmon

Charlie Blackmon is yet another amazing outfielder who is slated to enter free agency after the upcoming season.

Blackmon has been with the Rockies since the start of his career. If the 36-year-old were to move, the acquiring team would have four-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger Award winner, and 2017 NL batting champion amidst their ranks.

Charlie also holds a couple of MLB records, such as having the most hits in a 4-game series with 15, and RBIs by a leadoff hitter with 103.

Ian Happ

With 104 home runs and a batting percentage of .249, the 28-year-old will be a hot property in the open market.

Kevin is a three-time Gold Glove Award winner and the one-time Platinium Glove Award winner. One of the best fielding players in all of MLB, he will be an astute addition to any squad across the league.

Here are some other notable outfielders who can potentially become free agents in November later this year:

Designated Hitter

Possible designated hitters who will be mlb free agents in the 2024 season are Shohei Ohtani and Matt Carpenter.

A designated Hitter is a position in baseball where a player bats in place of another player in the squad. Most of the time, the designated hitters come in for a pitcher.

The position was recognized officially by the American League in 1973 but the National League didn't approve of it until they agreed in 2022. Now, the position is fully implemented in MLB and is universally accepted.

Shohei Ohtani

Shohei Ohtani is a two-time All-Star and 2021 AL MVP. Not only is Ohtani a great hitter, but also an amazing pitcher.

He is a very special talent and someone whose abilities haven't been seen in the major league maybe since the time of Babe Ruth.

The Angels superstar is entering his final year of the contract with the California-based team, and there will be suitors galore for the Japanese Phenom once the upcoming season ends.

The three-time All-Star and 2013 Silver Slugger Award winner, Carpenter, has 170 home runs with a batting percentage of .263. At 37 years of age, he will be a great addition to teams looking for players with amazing capabilities and veteran leadership.

Starting Pitchers

Possible starting pitchers who will be mlb free agents in the 2023- 2024 season are Clayton Kershaw and Corey Kluber.

Starting pitchers are those pitchers who start a game for their team. They are the ones who come out to pitch the initial inning.

Pitching is the most important aspect of the game and having a good pitcher is a necessity in the major leagues for a team to be good and have winning records.

A team with a proper pitcher often comes out victorious at the end of any given match. Hence, finding one for the team is crucial for any team in the league.

Clayton Kershaw

Regarded as one of the greatest pitchers of his generation if not ever, Clayton Kershaw is set to hit free agency coming November at the age of 34.

Even at his age, he will be a formidable player for any team in the league and no team would want to miss out on the opportunity to have one of the best out there on their side.

If he chooses to stay with the Dodgers or decides to move elsewhere, the nine-time All-Star and three-time NL Cy Young Award will command a respectable fee for his talents.

The 2014 NL MVP and 2011 Gold Glove Award winner, Kershaw also was named the NL wins and Strikeout leader three times and NL ERA leader five times.

Corey Kluber

The 36-year-old Corey Kluber has been to three All-Star games and has been named AL wins leader twice.

He won two Cy Young Awards and has a club option in his contract with the Boston Red Sox.

Lucas Giolito

Next on, we have a young gun at 28 years old, Lucas Giolito, who is the starting pitcher for the Chicago White Sox.

The 2019 All-Star, who pitched a no-hitter in 2020, will be a hot prospect among pitchers in the next free-agency market.

Aaron Nola

The AL Cy Young Award winner is set to enter free agency and will be in high demand for teams out for quality pitchers.

Relief pitchers

Possible relief pitchers who will be mlb free agents in the 2023- 2024 season are Jose Alvardo and Aroldis Chapman.

Relief pitchers are those who do not start the game but can enter to replace the starting pitcher due to some injury issues or fatigue and tiredness, among other things.

Having competent and good relief pitchers can be huge for a team as the relief pitchers or relievers can come in between and win a team the game all on their own. Having the starting pitchers sorted out is great, but having great sets of relief pitchers is also a must for a baseball team.

Jose Alvarado

Slated to enter free agency, Jose Alvardo of the Phillies has a career strikeout count of 310 with a 3.57 ERA after his debut in May 2017.
